Discover how we created an impressive XXL marketing sculpture using large-format 3D printing.
In this blog post, we show how we created for the German manga publisher Altraverse an impressive XXL marketing sculpture of the main character Scarecrow from the manga "The Secret of Scarecrow" created. Learn more about the entire process from modeling to painting and how we use giant sculptures for advertising to captivate customers.
As one of our first projects in the field of XXL marketing sculptures, we collaborated with the German manga publisher Altraverse to create the main character Scarecrow from the manga "The Secret of Scarecrow" as a giant sculpture for advertising and a life-sized trade show exhibit.
Dimensions (x-y-z):
1500 x 1300 x 2800 mm
Weight:
approx. 65 kg
Project duration:
approx. 3 months

The starting point for the project was a SLS Process optimized 3D model with a height of approximately 20 cm. First, the 3D model had to be scaled to the correct size and, due to its high geometric complexity, disassembled into 60 individual parts to enable efficient large-format 3D printing. Additionally, connecting elements were designed and tested to facilitate the later assembly of the many individual parts.
Our collaboration with Altraverse highlights the numerous benefits of large-format 3D printing for creating custom promotional figures and XXL marketing sculptures:
Flexibility and Adaptability: With 3D printing, complex and detailed models can be quickly and precisely adapted and reproduced, allowing for efficient customization to client requirements.
Cost-Efficiency: 3D printing reduces production costs, as less material is wasted and no expensive molds are required.
Faster Production Times: By using 3D printers, projects can be implemented more quickly and adapted to customer requirements, leading to a shorter time-to-market.
Sustainability: 3D printing is more environmentally friendly, as less material is wasted and support materials can be recycled.
Unlimited Design Possibilities: 3D printing makes it possible to develop innovative and creative designs that would be difficult or impossible to achieve with traditional manufacturing methods.
Our successful project with Altraverse is an example of how we can create custom promotional figures and XXL marketing sculptures for our clients across various industries. We look forward to developing more exciting partnerships and taking on future projects to help our clients realize their creative visions.

In the next step, the 60 individual parts were printed on our large-format ThinkBig 3D printers, which have a build volume of 1 m x 1 m x 2 m. Since we only had three of these large-format 3D printers in operation at the beginning of the project, the 3D printing of the individual components took a correspondingly long time.
White PLA was used as the material for large-format 3D printing because imperfections are easily visible on a white surface, and PLA is easy to sand and prime. After the individual parts were 3D printed, the support material had to be removed. In total, approximately 30 kg of support material was generated during the 3D printing process.
Since the sustainability of our projects is very important to us, we collect and sort all support material and failed prints by type, and then have them reprocessed into filament.
Finally, a custom crate was built to safely transport Scarecrow to its first deployment location, the Dokomi Comic and Manga Fair in Düsseldorf. Many thanks to the entire Altraverse team for their trust and excellent cooperation, and to our partner Fotodesign Gerd Koch for the painting.

After the custom promotional figures were completed, the individual sub-assemblies were pre-assembled with two-component adhesive for later painting, meticulously sanded by hand, and primed. Subsequently, the color tones were coordinated and selected, based on colored sketches of Scarecrow, which were specially created by the comic artist Gin Zarbo for this purpose. For this, several samples were post-processed, painted, and sent to Altraverse for review. After the color tones were finalized, the sub-assemblies were airbrushed and assembled after sufficient drying time. Due to their size, this required several people and steady hands.
"The Creative Polymer team created a life-sized 3D figure of one of our manga characters for us, which was a real magnet and eye-catcher at our altraverse exhibition booths last year. The result exceeded our expectations and delighted not only us and our readers, but also the manga's author."
