Giant Octopus for ROOT Berlin: Large-Format 3D-Printed Wall Installation

Some spaces are not solely defined by furniture, light, and architecture, but by a moment of wonder.

The Context: A Restaurant Gets a Striking Spatial Feature

Precisely such a moment was to be created during the renovation of the ROOT restaurant in Berlin's Telegraphenamt. They weren't looking for a typical decorative element, but a prominent feature that would shape the space: a giant octopus approximately four meters in diameter, to be mounted on the wall. The goal was clear: the installation was intended to immediately grab attention, immerse guests in another world, and give the space a unique atmosphere. Thus, a wall was transformed from a mere surface into a stage for an object that leaves a lasting impression.

Today, restaurants need to offer more than just good food. They create experiences, atmospheres, and memories. Especially in high-end gastronomic concepts, the design of the space plays a central role. Guests shouldn't just take a seat, but arrive, be amazed, and remember the place.

Therefore, a large-scale octopus installation was planned for ROOT in Berlin's Telegraphenamt. The octopus was not meant to subtly fade into the background, but to act as a deliberate focal point. With its diameter of approximately 400 centimeters, it became an object that shapes the space and immediately captivates guests.

The Challenge: Size, Weight, and Secure Wall Mounting

For a wall installation of this dimension, simply printing an impressive shape is not enough. It is crucial that the object can be securely fastened. The octopus weighed approximately 60 kilograms and had to be permanently and stably mounted on the wall.

This was the particular challenge of the project. The 3D model not only had to be design-wise effective, but also adapted for the later mounting. Likewise, the printing process parameters had to be adjusted to create a stable, resilient construction.

This interplay is particularly important for large-format interior objects: The installation must remain light enough for mounting, yet stable enough to be permanently secure. Therefore, size, material, wall bracket, and construction must be considered together from the outset.

About the Project

Diameter: approx. 400 cm

Weight: approx. 60 kg

Print Time: approx. 14 days

The Implementation: Large-Format 3D Printing and Custom Wall Mount

Creative Polymer produced the giant octopus using large-format 3D printing. The printing time was approximately 14 days. From the digital model, a spatial installation gradually emerged, which was intended to impress not only with its form but, above all, with its presence.

To ensure the octopus could be securely mounted on the wall, the 3D model was adjusted accordingly. The printing parameters were also designed to meet the mounting requirements. Additionally, in our metal workshop, we manufactured a special wall bracket that allowed for secure and stable fastening.

This resulted not in mere decoration, but in a meticulously designed custom piece: created for a specific space, engineered for wall mounting, and realized with the goal of leaving a lasting strong impression.

Project Data at a Glance

Object: Giant octopus as a large-format wall installation
Location: ROOT at Telegraphenamt Berlin
Application: Interior design and eye-catcher in the restaurant
Diameter: approx. 400 cm
Weight: approx. 60 kg
Print Time: approx. 14 days
Special Feature: secure wall mounting through an adapted 3D model, adjusted process parameters, and a custom-made wall bracket
Services: 3D model adaptation, large-format 3D printing, structural preparation, metalwork/wall bracket

The Result: An eye-catcher that leaves a lasting impression

The finished octopus became exactly what it was meant to be: a defining highlight in the space. Its size and position on the wall create an immediate impact. Guests don't just enter a restaurant; they immerse themselves in an atmosphere enhanced by an extraordinary object.

This project clearly demonstrates the possibilities that large-format 3D printing offers in gastronomy, hospitality, and interior design. Individual spatial objects don't have to be created from standard solutions. They can be developed precisely for a specific location, concept, and desired effect.

Conclusion: Space Design That Gets Noticed

The giant octopus for ROOT Berlin demonstrates how an idea can be transformed into a powerful spatial experience. Through large-format 3D printing, structural adaptation, and a custom-made wall mount, an installation was created that is visually impressive and technically flawlessly executed.

For restaurants, hotels, experiential spaces, and brand environments, 3D printing thus opens up unique possibilities: individual objects, striking forms, and spatial installations that not only decorate but also create atmosphere. This is precisely where design that leaves a lasting impression begins.
